Industrial cooling and ventilation in Zaragoza

Zaragoza was chosen as Spain’s logistics capital for geometry: it lies within three hours of Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and Valencia, and the Plataforma Logística PLAZA was built on that fact. PLAZA covers well over a thousand hectares of distribution buildings, with fashion, retail and automotive parts moving through units of forty thousand square metres and more. Twenty kilometres north west, the Stellantis plant at Figueruelas is one of the largest car factories in Europe and pulls a dense ring of stamping, plastics, seating and logistics suppliers around it. Closer in, Malpica, Empresarium and Cogullada hold appliance manufacture, paper, food and light engineering. These are big, tall, sparsely occupied volumes in very dry air, which is the clearest possible case for ducted evaporative cooling. Coolers handle the occupied zones and large ceiling fans stop the cooled air stratifying under a twelve metre roof.

Zaragoza climate — the honest version

The Ebro basin gives Zaragoza a harsh dry continental summer of 38–40 °C with humidity often under 25 percent and the cierzo wind scouring the valley, conditions in which evaporative cooling performs at close to its theoretical best and a duct cooler holds twelve degrees of drop through the afternoon.

Zaragoza has no port of its own, so boxes clear at Barcelona or Valencia after 17 to 23 days from Nhava Sheva · the road leg is 300 km from Barcelona or 330 km from Valencia, a single day either way.

Worth knowing locally

  • Supply throughout Aragón is 400 V three phase 50 Hz, matching the motors as built, so no transformer, rewind or frequency adjustment is required at commissioning.
  • Import is under CE marking and the EU Machinery Directive, and the large PLAZA operators typically require the declaration of conformity and IP55 evidence for their own insurance file before roof mounted equipment is accepted.
  • The cierzo can gust hard across the Ebro valley, so wall extraction and cooler air intakes are positioned on the sheltered elevation and louvre selection accounts for wind driven rain on the north west face.

Ask on WhatsApp
How does a duct cooler behave in a 40,000 square metre PLAZA shed?

It is applied zonally rather than to the whole volume. Units are ducted over pick faces, packing benches and dispatch lanes, which is where people actually stand, and the surplus air escapes through the doors that stay open anyway. Trying to cool the full cube of a building that size makes no economic sense in any technology.

Is the dry Ebro air ever too dry for the process?

Occasionally it helps to add moisture. Paper converting and some packaging lines suffer static and curl in very dry air, and an evaporative system lifting humidity from 20 into the 50 percent range improves handling while it cools. Where a product genuinely must stay dry, we duct the cooled supply away from it and rely on fans over that zone.

Which entry port gives the better transit to Zaragoza?

Barcelona is marginally closer at 300 km and has the wider choice of Indian services, while Valencia at 330 km sometimes clears faster in peak weeks. Both are a single day’s haulage from the Ebro valley, so the decision usually comes down to the sailing schedule rather than the distance. We quote landed cost through each port before the booking is confirmed.
