Industrial cooling and ventilation in Milan

Milan’s industry has moved outward but not away. Sesto San Giovanni, once steel, now mixes engineering workshops with converted logistics space. Segrate and the belt towards Linate are thick with printing, publishing distribution and fashion warehousing, where garments on rails need air moving between them rather than chilled. Rho-Pero carries exhibition logistics, chemicals and packaging. North into Brianza, Agrate, Vimercate, Concorezzo and Desio hold the precision engineering, electronics, tool making and furniture works that give the province its reputation. Pharmaceutical plants sit scattered across the whole ring. Very few of these buildings have any cooling at all, and the complaint is always the same: by two in the afternoon the air simply stops moving. Because the valley air is damp, the useful answer is mechanical air movement and extraction, not evaporation. A slow turning fan of six or eight metres diameter changes how a workshop feels without adding a gram of moisture.

Milan climate — the honest version

The Po Valley traps its own air, so Milan spends July and August at 34–37 °C with humidity routinely above 60 percent and almost no breeze, the muggy still heat the region is known for, which leaves evaporative cooling with too little wet bulb depression to be honest about.

Genoa is the working port for Lombardy at roughly 17 to 23 days from Nhava Sheva · the motorway run north to Milan and Brianza is 150 km and normally completed the day after clearance.

Worth knowing locally

  • Italian industrial supply is 400 V three phase 50 Hz, the same as the motors are built for, so there is no transformer, no rewind and no derating to calculate.
  • CE marking under the EU Machinery Directive applies directly, and Italian installers will additionally want the dichiarazione di conformità for the electrical work under the national installation rules, which the supplied technical file supports.
  • Many Lombard plants close for two to three weeks around Ferragosto in mid August, which is when most fan installation gets done, so orders are generally placed in May to allow for the sea leg and a June or July delivery.

Ask on WhatsApp
Would an evaporative cooler help in a Milan workshop?

Honestly, not much. At 35 °C with 60 to 65 percent humidity the theoretical drop collapses to two or three degrees, and the moisture added makes a muggy building feel worse rather than better. We recommend HVLS fans here and are happy to put that in writing, because a cooler sold into this climate comes back.

How does a large fan help if it does not cool the air?

It changes what the body feels. Moving air of one to two metres per second across skin accelerates evaporation of sweat and carries away the warm boundary layer, which reads as a five to seven degree drop in perceived temperature. The air temperature is unchanged, but the person working under it is measurably more comfortable and less fatigued.

Where do inline jet duct fans fit in a Brianza engineering works?

On short branch runs where a wall opening is impractical: solder benches, small paint and lacquer rooms, CNC coolant mist extract, compressor rooms and welfare areas. The Ø100 to Ø315 range handles the pressure drop of a few bends and a filter, and the mixed flow impeller stays quieter than an equivalent centrifugal in an occupied room.
