Industrial cooling and ventilation in Bologna

Two clusters define this area and both are hot for the same reason: process heat. Packaging Valley runs from Bologna through Ozzano and Imola and builds the filling, wrapping and labelling machines used worldwide, in assembly halls where test rigs, motors and drives all reject heat into the room. Motor Valley, from Bologna towards Modena and Maranello, adds engine, transmission and motorsport component work. Then there is Sassuolo, between Modena and Reggio, which produces most of Europe’s porcelain tile in plants where roller kilns run continuously above 1,200 °C and radiate heat down the length of the line. Interporto Bologna and Bentivoglio hold the distribution side, and agri-food works sit across the plain. Nobody here is short of heat and nobody has dry air. Extraction sized for the real thermal load, plus ceiling fans over assembly and picking areas, is the specification that actually works.

Bologna climate — the honest version

Emilia-Romagna shares the Po Valley’s still humid summer, 33–36 °C with humidity above 60 percent for weeks at a time, and the ceramic district adds its own kiln heat on top, so the problem here is getting hot air out of the building rather than trying to evaporate water into it.

Containers enter at Ravenna, about 17 to 23 days from Nhava Sheva, or at La Spezia for western routings · the road leg to Bologna is 80 km from Ravenna and roughly 200 km from La Spezia.

Worth knowing locally

  • Supply is 400 V three phase 50 Hz across Emilia-Romagna, matching the motors as manufactured, so installation involves no transformer and no rewinding.
  • CE marking and the EU Machinery Directive apply, with the declaration of conformity, LVD and EMC reports and IP55 rating supplied for each unit, which the machinery builders here scrutinise carefully because they hold the same obligations for their own products.
  • Ceramic plants schedule kiln maintenance shutdowns in August and around Christmas, and roof level extraction work is done in those windows, so orders are typically placed three to four months ahead of the chosen stop.

Ask on WhatsApp
What extraction does a Sassuolo tile line actually need?

Enough to remove the convective plume the kiln and its cooling zone throw into the hall, which is a thermal calculation rather than an air change rule. Hammer exhaust fans from 900 to 1750 mm are usually mounted high on the downwind wall against fresh air inlets at low level, so the hot layer leaves without dragging fired product through a draught.

Is evaporative cooling ever used in Emilia-Romagna plants?

Rarely, and we do not push it. Valley humidity is high enough to reduce the achievable drop to a few degrees, and in a ceramic or agri-food plant the added moisture is unwelcome near green tile, packaging board or dry goods. Extraction plus large ceiling fans reaches a better result without introducing water into the building.

Do HVLS fans interfere with assembly work on machinery?

Not at the speeds used. A 6 metre fan turning at fifty revolutions a minute produces a broad column of about 1.5 metres per second at floor level, which moves no paperwork and disturbs no light components. Fitters notice the difference in fatigue during long test runs, and the fan runs under 40 dB so it does not add to hall noise.
