Industrial cooling and ventilation in Marseille

Marseille trades and processes rather than assembles. Fos-sur-Mer at the western end of the Grand Port Maritime holds the steelworks, the petrochemical complex and the container terminals, Vitrolles and Les Milles carry distribution, aerospace subcontracting and light manufacturing, and the industrial zones around Aix add food, packaging and services to the shipping trade. Buildings across this belt are largely uncooled, and a July afternoon under a steel deck reaches the middle thirties with the mistral either helping or filling the place with dust. The first move is always air movement, because a large slow fan over a picking aisle or a fabrication bay changes what an operator feels by several degrees without any refrigeration. Ducted evaporative cooling then works better here than anywhere north of the Rhône delta, since Mediterranean summer air is drier than the Atlantic coast, though in a humid sea breeze the benefit narrows and we say that before quoting.

Marseille climate — the honest version

The Provençal coast gives hot dry summers where uncooled steel roofed buildings sit at 33 to 36 °C through the afternoon, mild winters that still need some heating, and a mistral that clears humidity for days at a time while blowing dust through every open door and shutter.

Marseille and Fos are direct calls from Nhava Sheva at roughly 17 to 22 days, the shortest sea leg to any market in this group, with delivery from quay to a Vitrolles or Les Milles site the same week clearance completes.

Worth knowing locally

  • Mains is 400 V three phase 50 Hz as across France, matching motor build specification, and no local rewind or step-down transformer is involved.
  • CE marking under the Machinery Directive covers import into France, and the declaration of conformity together with IP55 and IE3 motor data is what a port site or refinery contractor will file.
  • Mistral driven dust is hard on evaporative media, so cooler intakes should face away from the prevailing wind and pad washdown should be planned into the summer maintenance routine.

Ask on WhatsApp
Is Marseille dry enough for evaporative cooling to be worth buying?

Often yes, inland more reliably than on the quayside. Afternoon humidity in Vitrolles, Les Milles and around Aix regularly drops into the 30s, which is where a ducted cooler gives a solid drop in supply temperature. Directly on the coast a humid sea breeze narrows that benefit, so we look at local summer data before recommending coolers over fans alone.

What suits an open sided warehouse or a quayside transit shed?

HVLS fans. An open or partly open building cannot hold cooled air, so evaporative equipment there is wasted, but a large diameter fan works perfectly well because it moves the air mass that is present rather than treating it. For short duration work in one spot, a mobile industrial floor fan covers a crew without any fixed installation.

Can equipment be installed inside the Fos petrochemical complex?

Only in unclassified areas. Warehouses, workshops, stores and offices are straightforward, but any location with an ATEX zone classification requires rated motors and ours are not ATEX certified. We ask the site to confirm the zoning drawing for the intended location first, and where it is classified we recommend the client source certified equipment instead.
