Industrial cooling and ventilation in Lille

Lille is a distribution region wearing the clothes of an old textile one. The Roubaix and Tourcoing mills that built the city now house mail order, e-commerce and converted workspace, while the serious tonnage has moved to Seclin and Lesquin beside the airport and to the Dourges multimodal platform on the canal and rail link south of the city. Food manufacturing, mail order fulfilment and cross-border distribution into Belgium and the Netherlands fill most of the floor area, and the buildings are modern portal frame sheds of 10 to 14 metres. This is the coolest and dampest market in France and nobody here buys cooling. What they buy is a way to stop paying twice for the same heat. In a shed held at 16 °C at the pick face, air at the ridge can sit ten degrees warmer, and every hour the burners run widens that gap rather than closing it.

Lille climate — the honest version

Northern France has a cool damp maritime climate with grey winters hovering a few degrees above freezing, high humidity for most of the year and only brief summer spikes, which removes any case for cooling and leaves heat retention and ventilation as the entire commercial argument.

Le Havre is the usual gateway at about 20 to 26 days from Nhava Sheva, followed by a 300 km road leg north to Lille; shipments routed through Antwerp take 20 to 26 days and reach Seclin or Dourges in under two hours by road.

  • Automotive and metal components

Worth knowing locally

  • Supply is 400 V three phase 50 Hz, the same as the rest of France, and the drive supplied with each fan allows a very low winter mixing speed over pick faces.
  • EU import rules apply, so CE marking, the Machinery Directive declaration and the LVD and EMC test evidence travel with the goods and satisfy both customs and the building safety file.
  • Damp northern air condenses on cold roof sheets in unheated or intermittently heated bays, and steady low speed air movement with modest extraction reduces the dripping that spoils cartons and labels.

Supplying Lille — common questions

Ask on WhatsApp
Why would a Lille logistics operator buy fans at all?

For heating cost and comfort, not for cooling. A tall heated shed stratifies badly, so the roof void carries warm air that the pick face never sees while the heaters keep running. Mixing that air back down is the single cheapest way to cut heating energy in a building of this shape, and the same fans help on the few hot days each year.

Should we consider evaporative cooling for the northern French climate?

No, and we will not quote it here. Evaporative cooling depends on dry air, and the Nord region is humid nearly all year, so the temperature drop would be small on exactly the muggy days when cooling is wanted. Fans and extraction give better value, and for a handful of hot afternoons a mobile floor fan covers a specific work area.

Where do inline jet duct fans fit in a distribution building?

In the small extract duties a big fan cannot serve: battery charging rooms, welfare and changing areas, plant rooms, packing benches with local fume, and basement or underground car park branches. The Ø100 to Ø315 mm range handles the bends, filters and grilles typical of those runs and installs directly in the duct without a plant platform.
