Industrial cooling and ventilation in Antofagasta
Nowhere else in this list gives evaporative cooling as much to work with. Air this dry can absorb a very large amount of moisture before it cools down, which is why a pad cooler in a Calama truck workshop behaves in a way that seems implausible to anyone used to humid climates. The demand runs along the mining chain: heavy equipment maintenance and rebuild shops at Calama and around Chuquicamata, process plant buildings and contractor workshops serving Escondida, port and concentrate handling at Antofagasta and Mejillones, the La Negra industrial sector on the road inland, and the camps and workshops attached to each. Desalination plants on the coast now feed much of the water this region uses. That last point is the constraint that shapes every honest recommendation here, because an evaporative cooler is only as good as the water available to run it.
Antofagasta climate — the honest version
The Atacama around Antofagasta records some of the lowest humidity measured anywhere, often under 15 percent and inland frequently under 10, with 28–32 °C at Calama and far higher inside workshops, so the wet bulb depression is enormous and evaporative cooling outperforms almost every other option available.
Antofagasta and Iquique take 38 to 48 days from Nhava Sheva, almost always with one transhipment, and some buyers route through San Antonio at 35 to 45 days and truck north · from the port Calama is 215 km inland by paved road, roughly three hours, with mine site access by arrangement.

Worth knowing locally
- Mine sites and the city alike run on 220 V and 380 V at 60 Hz. Our factory default is a 50 Hz motor, so Antofagasta orders are entered as a 60 Hz build and the nameplate, motor and control gear are matched to the supply before dispatch.
- SEC approval from the Superintendencia de Electricidad y Combustibles is required for electrical equipment in Chile, granted through an authorised laboratory. We provide the test file and conformity documents and work with the importer to close certification, and mining clients often add their own site electrical inspection on top.
- Water is the real limiting factor in the Atacama, not heat. Confirm the source, the conductivity and whether the supply is desalinated before sizing anything, because feed water quality decides pad life, bleed rate and how often a unit needs servicing.

Ask on WhatsAppHow much water does an evaporative cooler need in the Atacama?
More than in a mild climate, because the drier the air the more water evaporates. A 30,000 CMH unit at full duty can consume 150 to 200 litres an hour plus bleed. On a site drawing desalinated or trucked water that is a real cost, so we size carefully, recommend recirculation with controlled bleed, and sometimes advise fewer units serving work positions rather than whole buildings.
What maintenance do pads need in desert conditions?
Expect a shorter service interval than a temperate site. Dust loads pads quickly and mineral rich water scales them from the inside, so monthly inspection and washdown is normal, with pad replacement annually or sooner. Fitting an inlet filter, holding sump conductivity below a set limit with automatic bleed, and flushing the sump weekly together make the biggest difference to pad life.
Can the water be treated rather than replaced constantly?
Partly. Softening or partial reverse osmosis on the feed reduces scaling and extends pad life considerably, and a conductivity controller managing bleed keeps sump water within a workable range. What treatment cannot do is remove the evaporative loss itself, which leaves the system as vapour. Sites with severe water constraints often pair a smaller cooler installation with a larger reliance on ceiling fans.
