Industrial cooling and ventilation in Houston

Anyone who has worked both cities knows Houston is the mirror image of Phoenix. Arizona is dry enough that water does the cooling outright; the Gulf coast is wet enough that adding more water makes a shift measurably worse. The work here follows the Ship Channel. Container and breakbulk terminals at Bayport and Barbours Cut handle project cargo and resin, the refining and chemical belt runs through Pasadena, Deer Park and Baytown, and valve, wellhead, pressure vessel and pipe spool shops are scattered across Northwest Houston and out along the Katy corridor toward the newer distribution parks. Inside a fabrication bay the problem is radiant heat off plate and welding, not ambient humidity alone. The workable answer is high volume ceiling fans to break the stagnant layer at floor level, wall or roof exhaust fans sized to give real air changes, and mobile fans aimed at welders and grinders.

Houston climate — the honest version

Houston sits at 33–36 °C with dew points in the mid twenties and humidity that rarely falls below 60 percent through summer, leaving almost no wet bulb depression to work with, so the entire cooling strategy shifts from adding water to moving and exhausting the air already in the building.

Nhava Sheva to Houston is 32 to 40 days, mostly via Suez with a Mediterranean or East Coast transhipment · discharge at Barbours Cut or Bayport with drayage of 30 to 60 minutes to the Ship Channel plants and around 90 minutes to Katy · a 40 ft HQ takes up to 60 coolers or a far larger count of fan sets.

Worth knowing locally

  • Gulf coast plants are usually 480 V three phase, with 208 V and 230 V in smaller shops, and the grid runs at 60 Hz. Our motors leave Pune wound for 50 Hz as standard, so Houston units are manufactured against the order with 60 Hz windings at the stated voltage.
  • Listing to UL or ETL and installation to the NEC is what plant electrical engineers and insurers ask for. We hold no standing UL file, so listing or a field evaluation is organised project by project through a recognised laboratory, and we say so at quotation stage rather than after the container has sailed.
  • Salt air along the channel is hard on fasteners and motor housings. Ask for the marine grade finish and stainless hardware option on anything within a few kilometres of the water, and expect to wash down guards on a routine.

Ask on WhatsApp
Would evaporative coolers work anywhere in the Houston area?

Only in enclosed heat sources such as an oven line or a furnace enclosure where the local air is genuinely dry. In open shop air a Gulf coast summer offers perhaps 3 or 4 °C of depression, which is not worth the water bill or the added moisture. We will not quote pad coolers as a general building solution here and would rather lose the line item than the customer.

How do HVLS fans help in a welding and fabrication bay?

They break the still air layer that lets radiant heat build around a worker and lift the effective cooling felt on skin by several degrees, without the direct blast that disturbs shielding gas. Fans are usually positioned between bays rather than directly over a weld station, with local exhaust handling fume. A 24 ft unit covers roughly 1,200 sq m at low speed.

Can you supply exhaust fans matched to an existing ventilation calculation?

Yes. Send the building volume, the required air changes per hour and the static pressure your ducting or louvres impose, and we select from the Hammer range between 200 mm and 1750 mm to hit that duty. We return a fan schedule with airflow, absorbed power and sound data so your mechanical contractor can check it against the original design.
