Industrial cooling and ventilation in Thessaloniki
Northern Greece makes and moves goods for a market far wider than Greece itself. The Sindos Industrial Area west of the city is the main concentration, packed with flour milling, dairy, confectionery, olive and canning lines, steel profiling and pipe, plus paint and chemical works. Kilkis, up towards the border, took a generation of textile and garment plants and now mixes them with food and metal fabrication. Oraiokastro and Kalochori are largely warehousing and cold chain support, feeding retail chains across Macedonia, Thrace and onward into Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Serbia by road. Most of it is single storey steel framed with eight to eleven metre eaves and roller shutter doors standing open through the working day. That open door habit rules out closed circuit cooling, and points instead at ceiling fans running continuously, wall extraction over ovens and fryers, and duct coolers over the fixed work stations where people stand all shift.
Thessaloniki climate — the honest version
Thessaloniki reaches 34–37 °C in late July with humidity around 45 to 55 percent because the Thermaic Gulf sits right at the edge of the city, so evaporative cooling works but returns perhaps six to eight degrees rather than the ten to thirteen Athens gets.
The port of Thessaloniki receives Indian boxes in about 16 to 21 days from Nhava Sheva, usually with one Mediterranean transhipment · Sindos and Kalochori are within fifteen kilometres of the terminal.

Worth knowing locally
- Supply is 400 V three phase 50 Hz as everywhere in Greece, identical to the motors as wound, so connection is direct and nothing needs converting.
- CE marking and the Machinery Directive govern import, and food plants at Sindos routinely ask for the declaration of conformity plus cleanable guard and stainless fastener options before an internal HACCP review will sign off a fan above a production line.
- Thessaloniki is the natural clearance point for buyers in Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Serbia, so a container can be split on arrival and trucked north the same week rather than routed through a northern European port.

Ask on WhatsAppIs evaporative cooling worth installing this close to the gulf?
It is, with realistic expectations. Humidity here sits around 50 percent rather than the 25 percent of Attica, so a duct cooler gives six to eight degrees instead of twelve. That is still worth having over a packing bench or a picking aisle, but we would not size a whole Sindos plant on evaporative units alone.
What ventilation suits a bakery or fryer line at Sindos?
Dedicated extraction directly over the heat source, sized on the oven load, with the rest of the hall served by ceiling fans. Hammer exhaust fans from 630 mm upward handle the hot moist plume, and keeping that plume out of the general air means the fans below are moving reasonably clean air rather than spreading grease aerosol across the room.
Can one shipment serve sites in Greece and the Balkans?
Yes, and buyers here often do exactly that. Goods clear EU customs once at Thessaloniki, then move as EU goods by road to Sofia, Skopje or Belgrade, with only the non EU legs needing a transit document. Consolidating one 40 ft high cube for several sites is usually cheaper than booking separate part loads, and we mark and pack each site’s equipment as its own lot so the container can be split on the quay.
