Industrial cooling and ventilation in Athens

Almost all of Greece’s heavy industry sits within an hour of Athens, strung along two corridors. West of the city the Thriasio plain carries Aspropyrgos and Elefsina, with the refineries, steel, cement, shipyards and the container terminals that support them, plus the largest concentration of distribution warehousing in the country. North along the national road are Oinofyta and Schimatari in Viotia, which hold aluminium extrusion, pharmaceutical manufacture, food and drink lines, paper and plastics. South east near the airport, Koropi and Markopoulo are full of smaller workshops, printers, joinery and third party logistics units. The building stock is mostly steel portal frame with eight to twelve metre eaves, insulated poorly if at all, and there are very few installed chillers because the running cost never made sense. That combination, dry air and tall uncooled sheds, is the ideal case for ducted evaporative cooling backed by large ceiling fans.

Athens climate — the honest version

Attica bakes through July and August at 37–40 °C with relative humidity commonly between 20 and 30 percent in the afternoon, a genuinely dry heat, so evaporative cooling delivers ten to thirteen degrees of drop and remains the cheapest way to make a large Athens shed workable.

Piraeus is roughly 14 to 19 days from Nhava Sheva and is the closest major European port to India · Aspropyrgos is twenty minutes from the quay and Oinofyta about an hour up the national road.

Worth knowing locally

  • Greek industrial supply is 400 V three phase 50 Hz, which matches the motors as manufactured, so no transformer, no rewind and no frequency conversion is required.
  • Goods enter the EU customs union at Piraeus under CE marking and the Machinery Directive, and the declaration of conformity together with LVD and EMC test reports is what the customs broker and the technical safety inspector need.
  • Athens installers are heavily booked from May onward and many plants close for two weeks in August, so a spring delivery with an April or early May fit is the schedule most buyers here work to.

Ask on WhatsApp
How much cooling can I expect from a duct cooler in Attica?

On a typical August afternoon at 38 °C and 25 percent humidity, supply air leaves the unit around 26 to 28 °C. Inside a working shed with doors open the floor level result is usually eight to ten degrees below outside, which for a warehouse or packing hall is the difference between a workable shift and one that stops early.

Is Piraeus really the fastest route from India into Europe?

For most Indian sailings, yes. Piraeus sits just inside the Suez exit, so transit from Nhava Sheva runs 14 to 19 days against 17 to 23 days for the western Mediterranean and a good deal more for the northern European ports. Buyers in the Balkans occasionally clear their goods at Piraeus for that reason and then truck them north from there.

Do I need mechanical extraction as well as the coolers?

Yes, and it is not optional. An evaporative system pushes outside air in, so the building has to let an equal volume out or the units stall against back pressure. Ridge vents, louvres or a bank of wall exhaust fans on the downwind side complete the path, and we size that relief opening as part of the layout.
