Industrial cooling and ventilation in Tampere
Tampere makes machines, and machine halls are big. Sandvik builds mining and rock drilling equipment here, Valmet supplies paper and board machinery, the cargo handling businesses around Kalmar sit in the same cluster, and around them are fabrication shops, foundries and gear and hydraulic suppliers in Sarankulma, Lielahti, Myllypuro and the Nokia industrial area west of the city. These are not pick and pack sheds. They are 14 to 20 metre bays with overhead cranes, welding stations, paint booths and doors that open onto -15 °C in February. Two consequences follow. Welding fume and solvent from paint work have to be extracted at volume, which is an exhaust fan question with a specific air change target. And the heat that a hall full of process equipment produces all day collects at crane level, where it does nothing for the fitter on the floor. Bringing it back down is the cheapest heating improvement available in a building of that height.
Tampere climate — the honest version
Inland Pirkanmaa is colder than the coast, with January averaging near -8 °C, frequent spells below -20 °C and a heating season running from September to May, while brief summer warmth barely registers against the cost of heating a 16 metre machine hall.
Containers reach Helsinki Vuosaari or Kotka in about 28 to 35 days from Nhava Sheva, then run 180 km north by road to Tampere in a couple of hours, so a delivery cleared in the morning is on site the same day.

Who buys here
Industries in Tampere.
- Mining and rock drilling equipment
- Paper and board machinery
- Cargo handling and lifting equipment
- Metal fabrication and welding
- Foundries and forging
- Hydraulics, gears and components
Worth knowing locally
- Finnish industrial supply is 400 V three phase 50 Hz and workshop distribution boards in these halls generally have spare capacity for a 1.5 kW fan circuit.
- EU rules apply, so CE marking with a Machinery Directive declaration and the supporting IEC, LVD and EMC reports are supplied and are what the plant safety engineer records for a fixed installation.
- Overhead crane runs dictate mounting: fan drop and blade sweep must clear the highest hook position and the crane envelope, so the crane drawing is needed before diameter and drop length are fixed.

Supplying Tampere — common questions

Ask on WhatsAppHow is welding fume extraction sized for a large machine hall?
By air change rate for the welding bay rather than by floor area, since the fume load depends on the number of active stations and the process. In practice a few large wall or gable fans from the 1250 to 1750 mm range give the required volume at lower noise and power than many small units, with make-up air planned so the hall is not put under negative pressure.
Can a fan be fitted in a hall with overhead cranes?
Yes, but the layout has to be worked out first. The fan must sit clear of the crane envelope and the highest hook position, so we work from the crane drawing and the lowest obstruction height. In many Tampere halls this means fans positioned between crane runs or along the bay edges rather than on the centreline.
Why include a mobile industrial fan alongside fixed equipment?
Because heavy fabrication work moves. A fitter welding inside a machine frame or a crew working one assembly for a full shift wants air at that position, not at ceiling level. The 370 W Model 1500 floor fan on wheels covers that duty, is moved by one person, and is often bought in small numbers alongside the fixed installation.
