Industrial cooling and ventilation in Helsinki

Nowhere in this group makes the destratification case as bluntly as Helsinki. Buildings here are heated for something like eight months, deep winter brings spells at -20 °C, and every one of those degrees is bought and paid for. Vuosaari harbour holds the modern logistics halls, Vantaa around the airport carries freight forwarding and pharmaceutical and electronics warehousing, Espoo concentrates technology manufacture and laboratories, and Konala and Herttoniemi keep older light industry, workshops and trade counters. A well insulated Finnish shed with a 12 metre roof still stratifies, often by eight to twelve degrees from floor to ridge, because insulation slows loss through the fabric while doing nothing about buoyancy inside. Running a large fan at low speed collapses that gradient and lets air handling units and radiant heaters work at lower output for the same floor temperature. Finnish buyers ask for the payback figure before anything else, and on a tall heated building it is usually one or two winters.

Helsinki climate — the honest version

Helsinki heats its buildings for roughly eight months of the year, with January near -6 °C, cold snaps reaching -20 °C and only a short summer that occasionally touches 30 °C, which makes recovered roof heat the dominant economic argument and cooling almost irrelevant.

Sailing from Nhava Sheva to Helsinki Vuosaari or Kotka takes roughly 28 to 35 days, usually with a transhipment at a northern European hub, and inland delivery within the capital region follows within a day of clearance.

Worth knowing locally

  • Finland runs 400 V three phase 50 Hz, identical to the motor build standard, and the supplied variable frequency drive allows winter speeds low enough to mix air without any perceptible draught.
  • As an EU member state Finland accepts CE marked machinery with a Machinery Directive declaration of conformity, supported by the IEC, LVD and EMC test reports supplied with each consignment.
  • Buildings with air handling plant should have the fan commissioned together with the heating controls, because once stratification is removed the floor thermostat is satisfied sooner and the setpoint or run time usually needs adjusting down.

What payback do Finnish buyers typically see on destratification fans?

With an eight month heating season and a steep floor to ridge gradient, most tall heated buildings in the capital region recover the equipment cost within one or two winters. The fan itself draws 1.5 kW at full speed and far less at the low winter setting, so the running cost is small against the heating energy it stops wasting at roof level.

Is there any reason to buy cooling equipment in Helsinki?

Very little. Summer is short and mostly mild, and the few warm spells are handled by running the same fans faster or opening extraction at night. We do not recommend evaporative coolers for this market at all, because the investment would sit idle eleven months of the year and the humid Baltic summer air limits what it could achieve anyway.

Will a ceiling fan cause a draught over packing stations in winter?

Not at winter settings. The drive lets the fan run at a small fraction of full speed, which is enough to overturn the air column without producing measurable air velocity at head height. The correct commissioning method is to raise speed gradually until the floor to ridge difference closes to a couple of degrees, then stop, rather than running the fan hard.
